In light of the recent wildfires in eastern Tennessee, I wanted to take time to reflect on what a great place Gatlinburg is. When I first heard about Gatlinsburg, Tennessee, I thought it was a natural tourist spot with a great atmosphere and good food.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park was founded in 1934, and optimists saw Gatlinburg as a great tourist opportunity. Some began to advocate for a national park for the Smokies, similar to the national parks in the US, such as Yellowstone, Yosemite and Yellowstone.
